GROUP CLASS
Each person’s reason for joining, or background in physical activities varies. We have members who’ve never really been into exercise before, through to serious athletes. Something very cool about martial arts is that they not only give you a physical workout, but also engages your mind. It’s interesting, social, fun.
Every class is a little different, no matter how long you’ve trained, there’s always something new.
When you first join you’ll be welcomed with open arms into our community. You will meet a nice group of people who are here with the common goal of helping each other improve.
At Melbourne Systema classes are held in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with everyone being addressed on a first name basis. Each class runs for 90 minutes and our syllabus offers a broad range of training which means that no two classes will be exactly the same.
In Systema maturity, attentiveness, and a desire to work are some of the characteristics necessary to learn. Basic courteousness and communication with training partners is essential in fostering an enjoyable and safe training environment for all. To help ensure individual approach and fast learning, average class size is 8 – 15 people. Training is open to anyone over the age of 16 and any level of experience.

Warm-up Exercises
All classes begin with specialised exercises designed to provide you with a complete physical warm-up and energy balance in a few minutes.
These exercises are combined with Systema breathing techniques to help warm the body from the inside out. The focus of the warm-up exercises is not just on the muscles but also the tendons and ligaments which aid joint stability and support.
These exercises will not only give you strength, flexibility and endurance, but also a high level of body awareness and confidence.
Hand To Hand Combat
In Systema you will learn the fundamental principles of unarmed hand to hand combat through a number of unique drills and concepts.
You will learn ways to develop endurance, sensitivity, striking power, the use of any part the body for defence and attack along, with the freedom to totally control any form of empty-hand attack.
As in all aspects of Systema the emphasis is on breathing, continuity, economy of motion and subtle movement to produce powerful and devastating attacks.
Ground Fighting
Unique strategies to overcome any conceivable attack from all angles and positions, defeat multiple attackers and disarm weapons – all from the ground.
Learn how to fight from the ground unarmed against one, two and three opponents who try to grab, choke, kick and punch you or attack you with a weapon.
Learn the tactics to develop breathing, avoid injuries, maximize your body and strengthen your psyche. From basic form and movement, progressing to the exceptional dynamic free-flow drills, enabling you to unlock your ultimate potential and free yourself from the worst opponents – Fear and Tension.
Weapons
Systema training includes defence against common street weapons. Explore the incredible ways of turning common items in your surrounding into highly effective tools of protection. Learn to conquer not just dangerous weapons, but even greater threats: your own stiffness, vulnerability and fear.
