Class Information

At Melbourne Systema classes are held in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. In Systema, maturity, attentiveness and a desire to work are some of the characteristics necessary to learning. Basic courtesy and communication with training partners is essential in fostering an enjoyable and safe training environment for all. Classes are open to anyone over the age of 16.

We offer a variety of classes to suit your individual needs.

GROUP CLASSES

Systema is the Russian word for “The System” and is a martial art combining both body and mind. Based on the simple principles of movement, breathing, relaxation and structure Systema is constantly evolving. Here at Melbourne Systema we have developed a systemised approach to learning which has been designed to break down the fundamental concepts of Systema enabling you to learn faster and gain a deeper understanding of the principles rather than just blindly copy techniques.

PRIVATE CLASSES

Private Training sessions are the quickest and most effective way to learn. They can be taken as an adjunct to group lessons, or as a standalone training program. Privates can be a great tool for brushing up on weak areas or to delve into areas of personal interest. Lessons can progress at the student’s own pace, and can span any range of topics or special needs.

SEMINARS

Our seminars are power packed events that will allow you to dramatically increase your knowledge and take your existing skills to the next level. Hosting both national and international instructors our seminars are guaranteed to provide you with the most up to date Systema training.

WORKSHOPS

Our workshops are held throughout the year and are a chance to explore given topics in greater depth than regular classes. They are designed to fast track your learning and understanding of the fundamental principles of Systema. They are free to all current Melbourne Systema students and only $30 for non-members.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Each person’s reason for joining, or background in physical activities varies.  We have members who’ve never really been into exercise before, through to serious athletes.  Something very cool about martial arts, is that they not only give you a physical workout, but also engage your mind.  It’s interesting, social, fun, every class is a little different, no matter how long you’ve trained, there’s always something new.  Overall we find that when people come down and try a class, they’re surprised how much fun it is, so the best thing we can suggest is giving us a call to find out if training at Melbourne Systema is right for you.

First you will feel very welcome from the moment you contact us. You will meet a nice group of people who are here with the common goal of helping each other improve. Classes are held in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with each class running for 90 minutes. Our syllabus offers a broad range of training. As a beginner, your initial steps are in learning to fall and roll correctly, working with correct posture, breathing, movement and learning to defend from punches, kicks, grabs and holds.

As your confidence and ability grows training will include:

  • Practical and effective self-defence techniques against common street attacks, multiple attackers and weapons.
  • Awareness training and body language interpretation and understanding the psychology of a confrontation.
  • Exercises for health, fitness and conditioning with includes comprehensive breathing methods to reduce fear and tension.
  • Methods of striking using all parts of the body along with various restraining and joint lock techniques.

Wear clean, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement such as a T-shirt and shorts or exercise pants. Something you don’t mind getting ripped or stretched. Avoid using clothes with pockets and zippers. Also bring a towel and a bottle of water. For the safety of yourself and fellow students, all jewellery must be removed before training and fingernails/toenails are to be trimmed short. No street shoes are allowed on the mats. Bare feet are recommended. Wrestling shoes are allowed.

Absolutely. There are always beginners in all our classes. At Melbourne Systema we don’t run classes just for beginners because from experience we know that you will learn faster by training with partner’s who are more experienced at Systema than yourself. Beginners can learn very little from each other, they learn best from feeling and modelling techniques and movements from experienced training partners. Plus, the advanced students are always eager to help you get you on your way.

We like students to train regularly as it is much easier to follow their progress, but how often you train is completely optional. Just remember that Systema, like any other skill, requires practice and the more you train the quicker you’ll progress. We offer classes 3 days a week with most of our members training about 2-3 times per week.

Everyone progresses at their own rate. Most find the beginning the most challenging part of Systema. Unlike most martial arts, Systema’s focus is not on memorising techniques but rather understanding the principles behind the techniques. We will not teach if A happens you must then do B. There are too many variables in life for that to work effectively every time. Instead you will be encouraged to use Systema’s basic principles to find your own solution to the problem. This freedom can be a little daunting in the beginning. You may find that you start questioning yourself; “Am I doing it right?”or “I’m not sure what to do next?”. Be patient with yourself. After a short time your body will start to become more comfortable with the movements and the work will become easier.

A common misunderstanding is that you need to be in shape before starting martial arts training. This is completely false. Here at Melbourne Systema classes are designed to allow our members to train ‘at their own pace’ while at the same time, giving the advanced student the opportunity to challenge themselves. Systema’s unique exercises are designed to increase your flexibility, functional strength, body awareness and muscular control.

Adam Vounoridis is the founder and principal instructor at Melbourne Systema. Adam has had over 25 years experience in various martial arts and has been teaching here at Melbourne Systema since 2006 as well as conducting seminars on both a national and international level.

Adam is also a fully qualified Osteopath and Acupuncturist which gives him a deep understanding of how the body moves and works. His clinic Active Body Osteopathy is run from the same location.

The students at Melbourne Systema are a friendly bunch. There’s computer programmers, office workers, salesmen, nurses…really just a group of regular people brought together to pursue similar goals. The training environment is fun, positive and safe, ideal for people with no martial arts background and is an excellent complementary skill set for officers in law enforcement, security guards, military personnel as well as experienced fighters of any martial art background.

Training is open to anyone 16 years of age and older. In Systema maturity, attentiveness, and a desire to work are some of the characteristics necessary to learn. Basic courteousness and communication with training partners is essential in fostering an enjoyable and safe training environment for all.

Getting started is easy. Either you can sign up for our 30 day trial by completing our online form, or you can simply call Melbourne Systema on 0414 507 375 and we will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you may have.
